Professor
Center for Visualizing Catalytic Processes (VISION), Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
Stig Helveg is Director of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Visualizing Catalytic Processes (VISION) and Professor at the Technical University of Denmark. He received the PhD degree in physics from the University of Aarhus, Denmark, in 2000. He then joined Haldor Topsoe A/S in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark and advanced to become Fellow. He lead the company’s activities on in situ electron microscopy in catalysis research and development. His research has provided unprecedented new insights into dynamic processes and functions in catalysis at the atomic-scale. Specifically, he has contributed to developing instrumentation, methodologies, and applications of transmission electron microscopy for in situ / operando studies of catalysts under relevant reaction conditions and at the atomic-level. He has worked interdisciplinarily with international leading experts to integrate advances from electron microscopy, micro-electro-mechanical system technology catalysis, chemical engineering, and surface science. These achievements have been awarded e.g. the Berzelius Prize (2012), the EliteForsk Prize (2018) and Materials Research Society’s (MRS) Innovation in Materials Characterization Award in 2019. In 2020, he joined Technical University of Denmark to further advance this research agenda by building up VISION.
