Professor
Johns Hopkins University
Mitra Taheri is a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and serves as the Director of the Materials Characterization and Processing Center (MCP) and the head of the “Dynamic Characterization Group.” She also holds a joint appointment as Chief Materials Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Her group focuses on the development and use of in situ microscopy and spectroscopy to characterize microstructural evolution and properties of materials and structures in a wide variety of environments and external stimuli. Her recent efforts include integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence into both synthesis and characterization methods, including microscopy, to achieve both high throughput and precision in materials development. She is highly active in both research and educational innovation and maintains a strong commitment to diversity in mentorship at all levels.
Taheri received her BS, MS, and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, followed by an NRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Naval Research Laboratory and a Director’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. She spent over 11 years at Drexel University as the Hoeganaes Endowed Chair Professor in Metallurgy before joining the faculty of Johns Hopkins University. Her research has received awards such as the Microscopy Innovation Award, an R&D 100 award, NSF Early Career award, DOE Early Career award, and most recently, the TMS Brimacombe Medal for mid-career scientists.
She is a native of Washington, D.C., and currently resides in Baltimore, MD, with her husband and two sons.
