Maria Solares grew up in Guatemala City, Guatemala before moving to Worcester, MA where she obtained her B.A. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Clark University. There, she began her activist work by founding the first chapter of Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). Currently, she is a Ph.D. Candidate in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Biosciences at Pennsylvania State University. Her doctoral research focuses linking of structure and function of oncoproteins. By using cutting-edge cryo-EM techniques under the direction of Dr. Deborah Kelly, she has resolved the full-length structure of flexible, natively sourced proteins. Guided by the structural findings, it is possible to tease out important disease-related function of tumor suppressor protein p53. She has continued to work for graduate students' interests at Penn State as the president of Huck Graduate Student Advisory Committee (HGSAC). When not in the lab, Maria cultivates her artistic abilities through singing and illustration, as well as spends time outside with her friends and pet poodle, Teddy.
