Thomas Newton is currently entering his second year as a PhD Student at Columbia University in the Integrated Program for Cellular, Molecular, and Biomedical Studies. Thomas received his BA in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in 2022. Working under the advisory of Dr. Wei Dai, he used the technique of cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) to study the in situ structure, function, and distribution of photosynthetic thylakoid membrane proteins, including ATPase and photosystem II. During his first rotation at Columbia University, he worked with members of the New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC), most closely with Dr. Misha Kopylov, employing single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) analysis to examine the structural heterogeneity of Qβ virus-like particles. Upon completing his first year of graduate studies, he has recently joined the lab of Dr. Alexander Sobolevsky, where he utilizes structural and biophysical methods, such as cryoEM and electrophysiology, to study the structure, pharmacology, and function of ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs).
